   题目:Nanoscience - from basic materials science to quantum physics and novel devices

  摘要:
  Nanoscience has in recent years emerged as a unifying field of science and technology, where different disciplines are joined and previously unreachable challenges are met. As an example, recent progress in semiconductor physics and technology has required combinations of the most sophisticated nano-fabrication
methods with state-of-the-art materials science, with in-depth quantum physics as well as strong connections to the competitive fields of electronics and photonics. I will illustrate this with examples from the “hot” field of one-dimensional semiconductor nanowires, in which self-assembly is used to produce highly perfect one-dimensional semiconductor structures, including a complex
internal structure in the form of designed and functional axial and radial heterostructures. I will go into some depths of the degree to which we understand and can master this atomic-scale controlled growth, and will also discuss limitations in terms of where this approach fails. For any real device application, the approach of self-assembly has to be combined with advanced forms of patterning and processing, such as lithography, passivation and formation of metallic and dielectric interfaces to the nanowire. I will give a
few examples of recent progress towards realizing high-performance devices for basic physics studies as well as for electronics and photonics and I will conclude with an outlook with regard to where I think nanoscience in general and the field of nanowires in particular will have the opportunity to go and what kind of impact we can expect in the future.

  报告人简介:
  Lars Samuelson obtained his Ph.D. in Solid State Physics at Lund University in 1977. After a post-doc at IBM Research Laboratories in San José, California, he returned to Lund in 1979 and a year later setting up an MOVPE-research effort at Lund. In 1986 he became Professor in Semiconductor Physics at Chalmers/G?teborg University and returned to the Physics Department of Lund University in 1988 to take up the Professorship in Semiconductor Electronics. He is the director of the Nanometer Structure Consortium, started in 1988, and today the primary center for Nanoscience in Sweden. He is the scientific leader of a Strategic Research Center in Microelectronics, “NANOSCIENCE for Future
Electronic Devices”, of a Strategic Research Center “Nanowires for emerging nanoelectronics and life-science applications”, and of a major European R&D project called NODE, “Nanowire-based One-Dimensional Electronics”, with participation by leading European electronics industries, research institutes and academic research teams. In 2001/2002 he took the initiative to create a
new university degree program in “Engineering Nanoscience” at LTH/LU, which started in the fall 2003. In 2002 he was appointed “doubly excellent scientist” by the Swedish Research Council (a) for his research on fundamental quantum physics, and (b) for his research on electronics and photonics. In 2005, the research program “Nanowires for Fundamental Materials Science and Quantum
Physics and for Applications in Electronics, Photonics and in Life-sciences”, directed by Lars Samuelson, was selected by the Swedish Research Council as one of 10 top research environments among all areas of science in Sweden. Lars Samuelson is internationally recognized for his research on low-dimensional structures and the physics and applications made possible by these structures. In the 1990s this primarily involved: (i) studies of self-assembly
of quantum dots and studies of physical phenomena via single-quantum-dot spectroscopy, and (ii) the realization of quantum devices by manipulation of pre-fabricated nanostructures. In recent years his research has been directed towards new ways for the formation of ideal one-dimensional nanowires through self-assembly, their physical properties, and applications of semiconductor nanowires in electronics, photonics and the life-sciences. He has published about 400 papers in refereed journals and given about 200 invited/plenary talks at international conferences. He is Fellow of the Institute of Physics, FinstP, in the United Kingdom, a Member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, KVA (Physics) and of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, IVA.
